Entering 2020 we recognised that global growth was likely to slow and the economic expansion that began a decade earlier was somewhat long in the tooth. Yet consumer and bank balance sheets were in good health, and unemployment was at record lows across many developed economies. There was good reason to believe that these factors would result in higher inflation and support corporate bond spreads.
