M&G European Smaller Companies Fund
Charles Anniss
Fund Manager: Charles Anniss
Funds Managed: M&G European Smaller Companies Fund
The Fund invests in smaller companies in Europe, with the sole objective of long term capital growth. It will invest wholly or mainly in securities of European companies which constitute the bottom third in terms of total market capitalisation of all publicly listed equity in Europe. When not wholly invested as above, the Fund may only invest in medium and larger capitalised companies in order to enhance the liquidity of the Fund.
The M&G European Smaller Companies Fund aims to achieve consistent outperformance of the benchmark and peer group within the European smaller companies sector. (In the UK, this is the IMA European Smaller Companies sector; in Europe, the Morningstar Smaller Companies Europe sector.)
The fund manager aims to select the winners from a poorly covered and misunderstood universe of potential holdings that are often mis-priced. The manager aims to identify companies that exhibit the following qualities: strong competitive edge; financial strength and strong cash generation; good management teams; companies that are in a well-established phase of earnings growth or that have made substantial progress in permanently improving their profitability; and low valuations.
Charles Anniss joined M&G in December 2000 as a member of the investment communications team and became an analyst on the equities team in October 2003, focusing on European smaller companies. He became co-manager of the M&G European Smaller Companies Fund with Giles Worthington in March 2006 and was appointed sole manager of the fund in January 2007. He graduated in French and Spanish from Bristol University and is a CFA charterholder.
