The Fund’s objective is long term capital growth through investment wholly or mainly in securities of North American (including Canadian) issuers. When not wholly invested as above, it may only invest in companies which are listed, registered or trading within North America.
The M&G American Fund is an equity fund invested in publicly listed companies throughout North America. The fund manager aims to outperform the benchmark S&P 500 Composite Index over the long run and deliver competitive returns in the North American peer group. (In the UK, this is the IMA North America sector; in Europe, the Morningstar Equity North America sector.) Stock selection is designed to be the key driver of fund performance. It is the core belief of the fund manager that value creation for shareholders – a company’s return in excess of the cost of capital – drives share prices over the long run. Consequently, investment decisions are determined by the fundamental analysis of individual companies. There is no reference to a benchmark in the stock selection process. Valuation is a key element of the fund’s investment approach and the fund manager’s skill lies in identifying companies that are better than the stockmarket realises.
Aled Smith joined M&G in December 2000 as a global equity fund manager. He manages the M&G Global Leaders Fund and the M&G American Fund. Before joining M&G, Aled worked at JP Morgan Asset Management for eight years, four of these as a specialist senior analyst for the media sector. Prior to joining JP Morgan, he was an actuarial consultant for Coopers & Lybrand from 1989 to 1992. Aled graduated from Lincoln College, Oxford, in 1989 with a BA in mathematics. He is a CFA charterholder.
